The Corporate Work Experience: Before & After Self Employment | Podcast Episode #10

In this episode of #WorkisRigged, Veronica Yao is joined by Kendall Emerson, founder of Candid Marketing Co., to discuss her re-entry into the corporate world after four years of self-employment.

They explore corporate frustrations around neurodivergence, why neurodivergent individuals ask "why" to gain clarity rather than question authority, and the exhaustion of trying to fit into rigid, traditional work structures.

Kendall also shares insights on embracing radical honesty, the importance of nervous system regulation, and why more neurodivergent business owners and leaders are needed to create inclusive, supportive work environments.

Meet Our Guest: Kendal Emerson

Before founding Candid Marketing Co, Kendal bounced through hospitality, retail, commercial radio, and enough unfinished certifications to paper a wall (relatable, right?). She got knocked back from the Australian Defence Force, made redundant from radio right after winning an award for it, and somewhere in the chaos of building a business from scratch, finally figured out why nothing ever felt like it fit: undiagnosed ADHD. Now she runs a digital marketing and operations agency built for brains exactly like hers.

SPOILERS! Here are some highlights from this episode:

  • Going Back into Corporate After Self-Employment. Kendal chose to re-enter a corporate environment after four years of business building, motivated by an attractive co-working space and a desire to share the load with a supportive partner.

  • Corporate Frustrations and the Need for "Why". Despite promoting collaboration and new ideas, most people are often labelled as “difficult” or “argumentative” when they ask for further clarification or point out potential issues. This can be especially demotivating for neurodivergent professionals who are simply looking for clarity and context to inform and motivate their work.

  • Embracing Radical Honesty. Being radically honest with oneself and others cuts through resistance, helps establish boundaries, and identifies who can handle authenticity, especially in the workplace. Acknowledging that personal and professional growth requires discomfort, and breaking away from the societal standard that ties human worth solely to productivity is essential.
